Coming Together Conference - Session 3: Discussions
REPRESENTING OUTCOMES & RESULTS: THE CBO DILEMMA

The Postsecondary Research for Impact on Community & Equity Group (PRICE) presents the challenging process of analyzing and presenting college enrollment, persistence and graduation data for an external audience. The PRICE group is made up of NYC-based nonprofits: Goddard Options, New Settlement, Cypress Hills, Bottom Line and Outward Bound.

SUPPORTING QUEER AND TRANS YOUTH IN THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS

We are queer and trans-identified educators wanting to facilitate a discussion about supporting queer and transgender youth in the college application process. This discussion will focus on examining how cis-heteronormativity impacts us all. If you feel you do not know much about this, please come. This is for you.

MICROAGGRESSIONS & APPROACHES TO SELF CARE

Microaggressions are verbal or behavioral slights that members of underrepresented populations must deal with on a near-daily basis. This presentation will operationally define microaggressions, explain how they invalidate professionals in Admissions, High School Counseling and Community Based Organizations and give you approaches to combat negativity with self-care.

HOW TO GRADUATE WITH MORE THAN JUST A DEGREE

The discussion will revolve around how to show students that they can extract skills, grow their network, and gain social capital by participating in mentoring, extracurricular activities, volunteering, internships, and classes. This session will include some lecturing but also group activities that require your engagement! The presenters will bring both Access and Success perspectives to the discussion

MOCK ADMISSIONS EXERCISE

Become a member of the admissions committee for a moment. What would you do if only one applicant can be admitted and the other two must be denied or waitlisted? This session will require active discussion and group participation. For new counselors or those that want to refresh.

PARTNERING TO ASSIST STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM ADMISSION

Opportunity programs offer financially disadvantaged students the ability to attend college while providing academic and financial support. However, the application process for these programs is extremely complicated. This session would focus on how high school counselors and college admission representatives can work together guiding students through these admission processes.

THE PERSONAL STATEMENT: CRACKING THE CODE WITH ... A RUBRIC?

Personal statement = gatekeeper. We created a rubric using our best personal statements and using feedback from college admissions officers. We'll share all of our tools - look at exemplars, score them on the rubric, then talk about how we actually coach kids through the process.
