TO ED OR NOT TO ED: A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM FOR FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE GOERS

In this session, attendees will get a look at how one public high school in Brooklyn successfully promoted the merits of ED to its rising seniors. Attendees will hear directly from students about their experience, engage in simulated lessons, and leave with an ED timeline and materials.

Enrollment at HBCUs has steadily increased in recent years. Black students often consider HBCUs racial safe havens, away from the micro-aggressions and racism of PWIs. Yet questions about relevancy, along with dangerous myths and stereotypes remain. Participants will gain tips on counseling students who apply to these institutions.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

College campuses are facing what many are calling a mental health crisis. Resources that for many campuses were already limited are now meant to support increasing levels of vulnerability within college campus communities. In our roles supporting young people, how do we help foster a healthier paradigm? In the Admissions process, how do we support disclosure without jeopardizing chances of admission? How do we stress the importance of rigor without encouraging burnout? How do we help young people to ask for help before they are in crisis, or ask for help in general? These are some of the questions we will seek to discuss.

Join a dialogue with Basta and Goddard Riverside Options Center as they partner to close the social capital gap by supporting upperclassmen and recent college grads to secure and thrive in their jobs. Then, we'll reflect on practical ways to empower our students to chip away at this gap throughout their college experience.

It will look specifically at the roles that both four-year colleges and pre-college counseling play in that process.

DIVERSIFYING OUR VIEW OF MULTICULTURAL STUDENTS: EMBRACING INTERSECTIONALITY IN COUNSELING

Students of color, regardless of their cultural, socioeconomic, educational, and geographical background, are assumed to have identical life experiences. This assumption neglects to embrace the diversity of our students. The session will explore how to embrace the diversity of experiences to better counsel students of color through the college process.
