The Higher Education Opportunity Program provides access and success for low-income students at elite schools in New York State. For many years, some programs have used Early Decision (ED). Now with prior-prior FAFSA, more programs have the ability to admit students ED. With the limited amount of spots, is it fair to admit most of the class ED?

TALKING TO OUR GRADS (AND ALMOST GRADS) ABOUT LOANS & DEBT

Counseling from a youth development lens means counseling for readiness. What role do loans and debt play in “readiness” and in the life choices our students must make? What conversations (and data) must we have as access and success professionals to get our students ready to be adults in debt?

SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES THROUGH COLLABORATIVE PRACTICES; IT TAKES A VILLAGE

Students with disabilities are historically marginalized from the college access process. INCLUDEnyc and Options will present a partnership model which breaks down barriers, de-stigmatizes, and enhances college access opportunities. Participants leave with advocacy strategies for families, students, and schools, an understanding of legal rights, transition planning, and the access counselor role.

CARING FOR THE CARING: IDENTIFYING AND MANAGING COMPASSION FATIGUE

Not all superheroes wear capes; some assist students to gain access to and persist through college. Our jobs focus on the greater good for our students, however, how often do you focus on making sure you are the best you can be? Our jobs center around helping students navigate some of life’s most stressful decisions and struggles, which can take a toll. Through this presentation, professionals will be provided a framework to recognize and overcome the impact Compassion Fatigue can have on their mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

NAVIGATING THE RAINBOW ROAD

Most of us feel our communities have “come out” as supportive and nurturing environments, but are they truly inclusive? Using tools such as the campus pride index, sharing anecdotes, and other resources, this open forum discussion begs the question, beginning with the admissions office, how queer-friendly are our campuses?

CUNY Start is an innovative model that is changing the way remediation is addressed at CUNY. It has outstanding outcomes for some of NYC’s most under-prepared community college students. We will go beyond the curriculum to explore the advisement model and team-driven problem solving to help our students persist and succeed.

This panel will be an opportunity to share some best practices around supporting Black males as they prepare to enter college, and supporting them throughout college. Black males face unique challenges on college campuses and we want to offer some tangible ways they can be supported.

Led by college students, this session will delve into how the parts of the college application, financial aid, and matriculation processes impact students’ hearts and minds. Facilitated by their former college counselor, this conversation hopes to provide practitioners the ability to understand how students feel navigating these processes.

ENERGIZING ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT & EMPOWERING STUDENT SUCCESS FOR UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS AT SUNY

NYS has a projected increase in the high school population as a result of growth in traditionally underrepresented and underserved populations. Educational attainment data show that the student populations growing the fastest are attaining the least, with Hispanic and African Americans age 25 and older vastly underrepresented.
