Session Title: Being a Champion for Undocumented Students

Session Description:

This session will address college access and success for undocumented students by providing a brief overview of relevant laws and state policies and reviewing cases studies. We will also provide resources such as scholarships and FAQs in order to assist with making your campus friendly to undocumented students.

Session Title: College Hopes & Worries Survey Results

Session Description:

The Princeton Review’s annual College Hopes & Worries survey reports on the outlooks of over 10,000 students applying to college and their families. Using the results, we’ll dive into goals and concerns around college admission. Each panelist will give their perspective on how these affect families they see.

Session Title: Exploring the Experiences of students of color through Campus Visits

Session Description:

Imagine taking high school students to a college campus visit and focusing specifically on the experiences of students of color. In one week our Outward Bound HS students read articles, discussed media, and visited three very different campuses to hear from the students themselves. College trips 2.0.

Session Title: Forging College Access & Success Pathways

Session Description:

Explore the importance of forming partnerships between higher education institutions and high schools to design access initiatives that provide pathways for first-generation students, underrepresented and historically underserved students to earn a college degree or credential of value. Learn about similar existing program models, specifically Champlain College’s Admissions & Access Initiatives.

Session Title: Improve with Improv

Session Description:

Improvisation is not only what you see on "Whose Line is it Anyway?" Improv can be an effective tool for creating relationships, building strong teams, and discovering leadership qualities about yourself and others. This session is for everyone. No background in improv or performance necessary (you won't have to pretend to host a party, fly a kite, or make-up scenes)!

Session Description:

Outside influencers have changed the role of enrollment managers. Demographic shifts, economic challenges, and competition change the way data-driven enrollment offices work.
 
 This session combines an understanding of industry-focused research on the maturity model for enrollment management with day-to-day examples of how leading institutions evolve to address these mounting challenges.

Education should provide equal opportunity, but too often, power and privilege dynamics create inequities. This session will examine parts of the process that highlight our differences, discuss how institutions perpetuate power and privilege and allow participants to reflect on how their own power and privilege dynamics impact their work.

Session Description:

When you think of a career in food, you think chef or baker. Fine career options for sure. But don’t forget that food is one of the largest industries, second only to health care in the US. And not just in the kitchen. Product development, technological innovation, scientific discovery, health and wellness, budget planning, business management, and development are just a few key areas exploding with opportunity. You counsel ambitious, entrepreneurial students who are looking for direction on how to kick-start their careers. This session will help you uncover the breadth of the food business so that you can steer them well. After all, 100% of people need to eat!

Session Description:

We will facilitate a roundtable discussion on what Latino students are experiencing in lieu of political changes that have been made towards DACA and Dreamer policies. We will discuss the support being given at NY high schools and colleges, in addition to work being done across the nation.

Session Description:

This session will focus on how prevailing understandings of community colleges and their students are a significant contributing factor to the racial and socioeconomic stratification of American higher education. It will look specifically at the roles that both four-year colleges and pre-college counseling play in that process.

Visiting colleges can be beneficial for secondary/CBO counselors or IECs when assisting students in their college search. For colleges, counselor tours are perfect for building connections and providing information about your institution. We will discuss tours our schools' host, how we coordinate them and moderate a forum for discussion.

Session Title: What Students Really Want: How 160 Characters will Revolutionize Education

Session Description:

In order to address the widening college completion gap, many programs have launched texting campaigns. Part discussion, part problem-solving, this session uses examples and data to discuss texting best practices likely to increase engagement, follow-through, and persistence. Participants will gain practices to help them launch and/or revise a texting campaign.
